Popularity of swat? | |||||||||||||||||||||||
Thanks, Kaolla, I appreciate that. and @ MaliceSage - Actually, I never thought of "reputation" as even being an issue when I first began. I had no idea the SWAT community was so small. I was just fortunate enough to play with some rather "kind" members of tRoS, and they continued to play with me and help me build my skills. I don't mind playing pubbies with newbs if they're willing to listen and learn, but sometimes, you want to play a PIN and rank up your higher characters.. and it's just frustrating knowing you don't have a sufficiently-skilled team. Also consider that we already have our slots filled with competent players. Basically if the host has the bandwidth to host 6 players, and there's 8 known competent players in the channel (not an uncommon occurance), your chances of getting in are naturally quite slim. You can improve those odds slightly, by posting in the Account Names thread. I can't speak for others, but I myself go through that thread looking for newbies to seek out. If you're not in the Yellow Pages of SWAT, I won't find you. EDIT: Might I suggest you also have a look at the Usergroup Hosts on B.net. Not a complete list by any means, but it might help you a bit.
I was answering your query in the general sense. This sort of question has been asked several times in the past. As for others who will vouch for you, just remember some players carry greater weight. Unless MinorFatality is the host. He doesn't like us Elitists. (Not that he's a bad player himself, but watch out for his tendency to be arrogant at times.)
I'm sorry for dumping you like that. SWAT is, and most likely will continue to be, the best custom game on B.net. And I will continue to play it with you. I'm sure that once Ngoc reaches 3 months she will calm down alot more, and as long as I cook and clean for her I should be able to play SWAT alot more with you. Just give me some more time and we can play again. "Inner Circles" are important for training, skill building, and establishing a reputation for yourself. I may have temporarily left mine, but I do expect to be let back in when I ask. I just have alot of Drama in my life right now. My advice is to make 3 or 4 friends who are all SWAT obsessed but of varying difficulty levels. It is probably better if 1 of you is better than the rest, so you have a leader. That is what happened with our "Circle" When we were first starting out Ong would lead and we would follow. Having a team full of people of simmilar skill levels also helps the team improve as you all learn to rely on eachother and you become a better team and everyone's skill level improves. If your a newbie and you play with the "elitists" you don't learn anything and you don't improve simply because you get carried through the game because they could have completed it without you. Eventually you will build up a solid reputation for yourself and players will start requesting to play games with you. Another thing that helps you improve is to post your replays, here, on this forum. This allows other players to see you play and come to their own conclusions on your skill level. If they watch you play and are impressed by your performance you are bound to get invited to more games. My favorite game of all time was a Nightmare Game I played with Bike, Lost, Lick, Ong and Azn.Pimp. We lost that game, but the adrenaline was pumping the entire game. That game was also a turning point in my reputation and marked me as one of the best Tank Players in SWAT. So remember to post replays of all of your insane and Nightmare games, even if you don't win them. As long as you don't die in the first 10 minutes it can only help your reputation and make you a more requested player. Just keep playing the game.
It'd be nice if you read all of it instead of half of what I wrote before making such a shallow reply. I specifically stated that, "I don't want to make it sound like I'm whining and complaining for myself, cause I'm not. I've been rather fortunate to have been given some leniency and allowed to play among the pro SWAT players." And yes, bike has let me play with him in the past. No one said anything about playing in a nightmare game with a rank 9. I only stated that I'd like to do PINs/insanes. If you don't like what I have to say, simply don't read it.
I'm actually from California, but I just happened to be up late. I posted in the Account names thread (on the very last page), but I'll check out the Hosts thread. Kaolla said to find a leader that knows a bit more about the game than most, or at least something like that. I suggest learning the pathing of mobs and read Demented's(knowledgeable leader) post on it (last page FAQ), and instead of finding a leader and following (not hard) BECOME a leader yourself! If you think people are good at the game that don't lead, find someone that does, and just see if the other guy isn't booted for the leader. That's just how it is. It's been awhile since I've been denied a game, this is how to build your reputation, not by being a follower. Once you can lead pinsane, trust me, you won't be denied too many games, either.
Yeah I read the entire FAQ page and I found SCV's bit on the paths especially helpful, but in any sense, thank you. Hmm, I need to update that. I've found a few better spots to camp, and a couple neat knick knacks to do. On the topic of the circulation route, I've now started developing a wacky, crazy, aggressive series of routes for making solo Snipers redundant. Eh... My take on the whole SWAT glass ceiling is simply whenever you play with more advanced players, the easiest way to prove yourself to them is simply to not die, as that doesn't set the team backwards. After you've got that "skill" down, doing more proactive and contributing actions should be your focus. I've been a total nub in front of these guys, hitting wrong hot-keys, missing commands etc. but at least my death-rate is noticeably low. Zombies just don't like my-kind of meat, if you get my drift...
I haven't read this whole thread, but I do have to agree with that. If you can stay alive, then you're a gun firing. Regardless of whether you do any objectives, staying alive and killing helps. Heh...earlier today I had a funny insane where I stayed alive despite being swarmed in the evil building by an abom and 200 zombies , while the rest of the team ran north. Funny game! *FLASHBACK!* I still vivdly remember my entrance into the big leagues with my first pin. It was with my goon demo, I think r6/7 at the time. It was with a bunch of other people of similar skill level as me with the exception of two people: DThomas the kick-ass borg and LordSesshomaru the crazy-ass sniper. Basically I and the others just kept ourselves and DThomas alive while I blew the everloving crap out of everything and DThomas kept the bosses busy and Sess won most of the game for us. */FLASHBACK!* Anyways, the point of that flashback is that it was a very good game with good people but unfortunately I don't remember anyone besides DThomas and Sess in there even though we had a very good team who at least knew how to take care of themselves. it was a good clean pin with little drama and lotsa fireworks (I pride myself on my fireworks ). It's a bit of a shame that i forgot them and looking back I see why: it wasn't their lack of skill but their lack of persistance, they never tried to follow it up in the swat community with a channel visit or a forum visit. I also don't remember getting messages from them asking to join games or if I had a game they could join. I'm starting to make it a point to try and keep in touch with good players like that who just haven't gotten their names out yet and whispering them with the website and channel and names of people they need to talk to. unfortunately there haven't been too many people
This is a good post to read. Noobs: Stay the fuck alive, and don't hinder the team and you're doing fine! Once you've gotten down staying alive pretty well *cough* not many of you btw *cough* also help the rest of your team stay alive as best you can. Gargs going for the mana-less critical guy is not a good thing, take care of it. Once you can do these things, you pretty much are a decent swattie, at least good enough to get into pinsane games most of the time. Objectives are more about time limit in NM/Pin, if you are alive, that means less circling for rez and more getting shit done. *I say there is a time limit on Nightmare because, well, there is! Zombies hitting for 750++ dmg with hitpoints that MIRV only put a slight dent in (which time equips them with) aren't what you want. Swear to god, I feel like a light armor nanite guy with hvy armor movespeed towards the end.
